How does EGCG affect lipid metabolism and hepatic steatosis in animal models of diet-induced MAFLD?
Label:chem
Topic
Rodent studies typically employ high-fat diets (HFD) to induce steatosis; EGCG is administered orally or mixed with chow.
Answer
EGCG supplementation (0.1–3.2 g/kg diet or 50–700 mg/kg body weight) significantly lowers hepatic triglycerides and total cholesterol, reduces liver weight, decreases ALT/AST activities, and diminishes inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β). It also up-regulates genes involved in β-oxidation and down-regulates lipogenic transcription factors such as SREBP-2.
