What is the role of argatroban in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS)?
Label:chem
Topic
Argatroban is an anticoagulant that inhibits thrombin-induced vascular events. It has been widely used in Asian countries to treat AIS. Previous studies have suggested that combining argatroban with alteplase (a thrombolytic agent) might improve outcomes in patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) by enhancing vessel recanalization and preventing reocclusion.

Answer
Argatroban is used in combination with alteplase to potentially improve functional outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke by reducing early neurological deterioration, especially in patients with higher baseline National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores. The study suggests that this combination therapy may be beneficial in reducing early neurological deterioration within 48 hours in patients with NIHSS scores ≥10.
