What are the potential toxic effects of fipronil (FIP) and imidacloprid (IMID) on human cells?
Label:chem
Topic
A study investigated the cytotoxic effects of FIP and IMID on human epithelial cell cultures (HaCaT) to assess potential health risks from exposure in domestic settings.
Answer
Both FIP and IMID triggered the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation in human keratinocyte cells, leading to decreased cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner. FIP reduced cell viability to 64.6% at 5.0 μg mL⁻¹, while IMID reduced it to 52.6% at 250 μg mL⁻¹. These findings suggest that FIP and IMID can cause oxidative stress and cytotoxicity in human skin cells.
