How did 5-HTP affect the acquisition and expression of conditioned fear in rats?
Label:chem
Topic
Some study examined the effects of 5-HTP on fear acquisition and expression when administered at different times and doses.
Answer
5-HTP, (+-)-5-Hydroxytryptophan, at doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg, administered prior to acquisition of conditioned fear, reduced both freezing during foot shocks and conditioned fear upon re-exposure to the chamber. A lower dose (75 mg/kg) did not have this effect. When administered prior to the expression of conditioned fear, 5-HTP at doses ≥25 mg/kg reduced freezing in a dose-dependent manner. However, 5-HTP (500 mg/kg) administered immediately after fear acquisition did not impact the subsequent expression of conditioned fear.
