What is tirzepatide (TZP) chemically, and by which biochemical mechanism does it exert its hepatic effects?
Label:chem
Topic
Tirzepatide is the pharmacological agent used in the study; it is not an investigational drug but an FDA- and AIFA-approved dual agonist for obesity and T2D.
Answer
Tirzepatide is a once-weekly dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It improves hepatic insulin sensitivity, suppresses glucagon secretion, reduces hepatic glucose production and de-novo lipogenesis, and lowers systemic inflammation, thereby decreasing hepatic steatosis and fibrogenesis.
