Does diatomaceous earth (DE) modulate key intestinal and hepatic proteins involved in lipid chemistry/transport?
Label:chem
Topic
Immunohistochemistry and Western blot quantified lipid-transport and cholesterol-efflux proteins.
Answer
DE down-regulated jejunal IFABP, ACAT2 and MTP (by 22–54 %) and hepatic MTP and LDLr (by 24–38 %), while up-regulating jejunal ABCG5, ABCG8 and LXRα/β (25–107 %), indicating decreased lipid absorption and enhanced cholesterol efflux without altering hepatic ABCA1, ABCG5/G8 or CYP7A1.
