How does the combination of virgin coconut oil (VCO) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) enhance the protective effects against trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-induced damage?

Topic
Virgin coconut oil (VCO) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) have been shown to have individual protective effects against oxidative stress and inflammation. This study examines whether the combination of VCO and 5FU provides enhanced protection against TCA-induced damage in the gastrointestinal tract of rats.
Answer
The combination of virgin coconut oil (VCO) and 5-fluorouracil (5FU) enhances the protective effects against trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-induced damage by synergistically reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. The study found that the combination treatment significantly reversed TCA-induced increases in MDA and MPO levels, restored antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, GPx), and inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β) and NF-κB. Histopathological analysis showed that the combination treatment effectively reduced TCA-induced tissue damage, including restoring normal histological structure and reducing inflammatory cell infiltration in the stomach and intestine. This suggests that the combination of VCO and 5FU provides a more robust defense against TCA-induced oxidative stress and inflammation compared to either treatment alone.
