What is the efficacy of silver nitrate as a larvicide against juvenile Aedes aegypti mosquitoes?
Label:chem
Topic
Silver nitrate (AgNO₃) is a chemical compound commonly used in water treatment processes for its antimicrobial properties. It has been shown to be effective against a broad range of pathogens at low concentrations. This study investigates whether silver nitrate, at concentrations deemed safe for human consumption, can also serve as a larvicide to control mosquito populations that transmit vector-borne diseases.
Answer
Silver nitrate demonstrated significant larvicidal effects on juvenile Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. At concentrations of 20, 40, and 80 μg/L, silver nitrate reduced the survival and emergence of larvae into adult mosquitoes. The highest concentration tested (80 μg/L) achieved an inhibition of emergence of 88.66% by day 16 of exposure. This suggests that silver nitrate can be an effective component in integrated vector management strategies for controlling Aedes aegypti, while also ensuring water safety for human consumption.
