What are the effects of UV light exposure on lignin in wood surfaces during weathering?
Label:chem
Topic
Lignin is a component of wood that degrades upon exposure to UV light.
Answer
Initial exposure to UV light leads to the rapid degradation and depletion of lignin on the wood surface. Once easily degradable lignin is broken down and removed, the remaining wood structure primarily consists of cellulose and hemicellulose, which are less susceptible to further photodegradation. The degradation of lignin, as evidenced by IR spectra, also results in a more hydrophilic surface.
