Phenanthraquinone (PQ) acts as a photocatalyst by being irradiated to its electronically excited state (PQ∗) by visible light, which then abstracts hydrogen from an aldehyde to form an acyl radical and PQ-H. PQ-H is subsequently oxidized by Ag2O to regenerate the photocatalyst.
