How does the amount of triethylborane (TEB) affect the reactivity ratio of ethylene oxide (EO) in the copolymerization with anhydrides?
Label:chem
Topic
The reactivity ratio of EO (rEO) in the copolymerization with anhydrides can be manipulated by varying the amount of triethylborane (TEB) used in the reaction.
Answer
The reactivity ratio of EO (rEO) can be progressively increased from values below 1 to values above 1 by increasing the amount of TEB. For example, with 1.3 eq. of TEB, rEO is 0.52, while with 2.3 eq. of TEB, rEO can reach 1.67. This allows for the synthesis of copolymers with different compositions and properties.
